Calculating Overtime Correctly Under the FLSA
February 10, 2010 at 02:00 PM ET
The Department of Labor (DOL) recovered more than $185 million in back wages for over 228,000 employees in 2008.
In 2009, both Lowe’s and Wachovia both settled with the DOL to the tune of $29.5 million and $39 million respectively.
Their mistake—incorrectly figuring how overtime pay rate is calculated according to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
The Great Recession has also brought renewed interest to this issue: reduced revenues have some companies trimming payroll costs, while employees—casualties of this cost-cutting—are pushing back on status issues.
But, regardless of your current situation, calculating overtime is a complex, critical payroll function, and there’s no time like the present to ensure your procedures are correct!
