Sales Tax Audits of your Exemption and Resale Certificates: Are You Ready?
July 30, 2009 at 02:00PM ET
Did you know? In over 75 percent of companies, the responsibility for managing sales tax exemption certificates falls on the credit department.
Did you know? Sales tax compliance audits are on the rise—up an estimated 300% since 2003!
Are you in compliance with the 7,600 possible jurisdictions collecting taxes in the United States today, and an average of 600 changes each year in tax rates and rules?
While credit managers may moan that exemption certificate management is a burdensome and time-consuming process, compliance is critical to your organization’s bottom line. Failing to do this job properly can prove expensive in an audit, since a missing certificate means large assessments, penalties and interest.
How expensive? California business tax payers were recently assessed $340 million in additional sales and use tax during audits, $59 million of which was avoidable!
Make sure you're ready with all the certificate data you need to avoid (or get through) that audit. Join IOMA and our expert faculty on July 30th at 2PM ET for this intensive 90-minute program and discover:
- How bad is it? What is the latest on the State government budget squeeze and what can you expect to see (If you haven’t already) ?
- How to determine whether your company is exposed including a discussion of nexus and the potential scope of your exposure.
- What are the regulations? What is expected for regulatory compliance?
- How to handle local tax jurisdictions that do not operate under state authorities (i.e. home rule cities in Colorado and parishes in Louisiana)

- Examples of Audits, techniques, data requested, and more.
- Managing Audits – make it easy on yourself.
