Target-Date Funds: What's Right With Them, What's Wrong With Them & What Needs To Change

When is it?

  July 28, 2009 at 02:00PM ET

Target date funds came under heavy fire last week at a joint hearing called by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Department of Labor (DOL).

At issue? Everything from how the funds are named and marketed to how their investment mix changes over time, not to mention performance: some workers slated to retire in 2010 wound up losing up to 42 percent of their savings in this year's financial meltdown.

Target-date funds held an estimated $164 billion at the end of last year - up from $71 billion in 2005, due in large part to the ever-growing number of automatic enrollment plans, which rely heavily on these and other DOL pre-approved qualified default investment alternatives.

With so many funds - and their participants - in the red this year, expect fiduciary oversight of such offerings to kick into high gear in the months and years to come, AND tough questions from your employees.
