LEGAL: Courts Lower Bar on Fired Workers’ Discrimination Lawsuits

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in January upheld a lawsuit by a security officer who claimed she was fired because she was pregnant. The final award amount was a pittance, especially for a big firm such as Wackenhut, but the verdict symbolizes what many legal experts warn is a lowering of the plaintiff’s bar in employment discrimination cases. Security supervisors need to be put on notice that a wayward glance at a security guard’s pregnant belly or a single comment about an officer’s accent may be enough to support a job bias claim in today’s legal environment.
