Background Checks: Legal Compliance in the Hiring Process

When is it?

  June 20, 2007 at 02:00PM ET

The recent resignation of MIT’s dean of admissions for misrepresenting academic credentials on her resume has put the spotlight on background checks—not only for new hires, but for existing employees as well.

In fact, a recent report by ADP Screening and Selection Services shows they conducted 5.8 million background checks in 2006 - a 20 percent increase over 2005. It also reveals that 44 percent of applicants lie about their work histories, 41 percent lie about their education, and 23 percent falsify credentials or licenses.

But background checks do not come risk free. You must make sure you’re using them appropriately and not opening your organization up to a host of legal pitfalls—and gain confidence in your hiring and promoting decisions!

Join IOMA in this 90-minute audio program as we explore the ins and outs of background checks and:

  • Learn when a background check can and should be done
  • Identify who is—and isn’t—an appropriate target for a background check
  • Discover what you need to reveal to the applicant (before and after the background check is complete)
  • Learn what the appropriate and legal search areas are
  • Develop steps for exactly what to do if the check comes back positive for criminal, civil, or financial irregularities—and how to use that information properly
  • Understand your access to items such as school records, credit reports, past employment, criminal records…and more!
